Assembly Build Process

Sun's Assembly Build Process allows you to configure a cartridge and manifold, or main stage and pilot stage cartridge, and build a digital assembly in three dimensional space. The resulting output of this process is the assembly product page, including configuration-specific images, symbols, product information and CAD files for download.

The Assembly Build Process can be accessed from either a cartridge or manifold product page. Only valid choices are allowed.

From a manifold page, you must first choose your cartridge function. Once you choose your function, click on the BUILD ASSEMBLY button below the WHERE TO BUY BUTTON. Once clicked, you will be presented with valid cartridges for your manifold. Select the cartridge of your choice and follow the instructions at the top of the page. If your particular combination has been generated before, the resulting assembly page will be available immediately. If not, you will be asked to enter your email address. Once the page is complete, an email will be sent to you including a link to the assembly product page.

From a cartridge product page, click on BUILD ASSEMBLY and you will be presented with a listing of compatible manifolds. In the case of main stage and pilot stage cartridges, you can either build a cartridge to cartridge assembly or a cartridge to manifold assembly. Once your choice has been made, follow the instructions at the top of the page. If your particular combination has been generated before, the resulting assembly page will be available immediately. If not, you will be asked to enter your email address. Once the page is complete, an email will be sent to you including a link to the assembly product page.

Please note that the Assembly Build Process is an automated process. It can be utilized at any time. Pages are generated typically within minutes but delays can occasionally be expected. In the event of a delay, a team at Sun will work to resolve the issue to ensure you receive your information as quickly as possible.

This valve is a ventable, bypass/restrictive, fixed-orifice, priority flow control with an integral pilot control cavity. The pilot control cavity will accept any T-8A pilot pressure or directional control cartridge. It takes an input flow at port 1 and uses it to satisfy the priority flow at port 3. If the input flow exceeds the priority flow requirement, the excess flow is bypassed out of port 2. Bypass flow may be used for a secondary circuit. Depending on which pilot control valve is installed in the T-8A cavity, priority flow can be selected electrically, manually, hydraulically or pneumatically.

Customer must specify a flow rating. Factory set flow ratings are within +/- 10% of the requested setting.
Using a pressure control in the T-8A pilot control cavity will limit the pressure at the priority port (port 3). If pressure on the bypass port (port 2) exceeds the setting of the pressure control, priority flow will be shut off and all the flow will go out the bypass port.
Maximum pressure at port 3 should be limited to 3000 psi (210 bar).
NOTE: With the -8 control option, the main stage valve should first be installed to the correct torque value. The T-8A pilot control valve should then be installed into the main stage valve to its required torque value.
Both priority and bypass flow are usable up to the system operating pressure.
Priority remains relatively constant regardless of variation in input flow.
Bypass flow is not available until priority flow requirements are satisfied, except when the valve is vented. When port 4 (vent) is open, all flow diverts to port 2 if pressure at port 1 (inlet) is 150 psi (10,5 bar) or higher.
Pressure at the bypass port (port 2) may exceed pressure at the priority port (port 3).
The sharp-edged orifice design minimizes flow variations due to viscosity changes.
The -8 control option allows the pilot control valve to be incorporated directly into the end of the cartridge via the T-8A cavity. These pilot control cartridges are sold separately and include electro-proportional, solenoid, air pilot, and hydraulic pilot operation. See Pilot Control Cartridges.
Incorporates the Sun floating style construction to minimize the possibility of internal parts binding due to excessive installation torque and/or cavity/cartridge machining variations.

What happens if I block the control flow (priority) port?

All flow is blocked, hence the term priority. The priority flow has to be satisfied.

What happens if I block the bypass port on a priority flow control?

The valve acts as a 2 port restrictive flow control.

What is the compensating pressure of Sun's flow controls?

The spring force in our flow controls equates to about 100 psi (7 bar). This is high enough to give the valves acceptable capacity and not too high for proper circuit operation. 100 psi (7 bar) is the spring force; at the upper end of the flow control's range, the drop through the valve will be as high as 250 psi (17 bar) before it starts modulating.

How big is a drop of hydraulic oil?

There are exactly 250 Sun drops in a cubic inch or 15 in a cc.

What is the pressure drop through a flow control?

In a meter-in flow control circuit if the pump is set at 3000 psi and the load is 2000 psi the drop through the flow control is 1000 psi. In a meter-out circuit with the load at 2000 psi the drop through the flow control is 2000 psi.

How accurate are Sun's flow controls?

We claim +/- 10%. We set to +/- 5% in production testing to allow for differences in customers' conditions. If you want accuracy, stay in the bottom 2/3rds of the range. Our 12 gpm (45 L/min.) flow controls are quite flat at 9 gpm (34 L/min.) and dead flat below 6 gpm (23 L/min.), until you get to the bottom of the range. Below about .25 gpm (1 L/min.), spool leakage and orifice conditions start to limit accuracy.

I have a heat problem, will Sun's priority flow control help?

I am afraid not. Unless you are overflowing your current valve and correctly size ours, you are not likely to notice any improvement. Priority flow controls are not efficient devices. They are an easy way to get more than 1 source of oil from 1 pump but they can generate a lot of heat. Try to size your actuators so the pressures are similar on both the priority and the bypass circuits. If you can't do that, try to have the lower flow leg be the lower pressure. The pump pressure is determined by whichever leg is higher and if there is flow that is taking a pressure drop that is not doing work it is creating heat.

What parts of the Sun cartridge valve are field serviceable?

Only external seals are serviceable. Sun offers replacement seal kits for all cartridge models. The applicable kit part number can be found in the product page's Technical Data table or by using our Cartridge Seal Kit search function located under Accessories. Please note: Converting the external seals from one material to another does not ensure fluid compatibility with that material due to the existence of internal seals within the cartridge.
