Pressure Kickdown with Reduced Pressure Spike

The example shows an alternative to a kick-down relief valve that typically causes pressure spikes in the tank line.

  • Kickdown relief valve: RQ*B   
  • Pilot-operated vented relief valve:   RV**    

Benefits of this circuit arrangement

  • Kickdown relief valves open rapidly and stay open when supply pressure exceeds the setting of the valve. The rapid opening could cause pressure spikes in the tank line. 
  • An RQ** can be used to pilot operate a vented relief valve RV**. The circuit in Fig.2 can replace the kick-down relief in Fig.1. Since the pilot kick down RQ**unloads the RV** downstream, it unloads less rapidly (due to a damping orifice within the RV**).
